Pediatric Dentistry
Creates Healthy Smiles in Children
In Pediatric dentistry, we recommend that kids see their dentist at least every 6 months.
Young children experience a lot of changes in the mouth within the first 12 – 14 years of life. During each stage, these changes require close monitoring by a pediatric dentist.
Pediatric dentisty is a specilized dental practice that is dedicated to protecting the oral health of children of all ages. Children should see a pediatric dentist from the age of 6 months and on up through their teens.
- First 6 Months – A child’s first set of teeth (called milk teeth or baby teeth) start appearing.
- 5 – 6 Years Old – The baby teeth start falling out and permanent (adult) teeth start to grow in.
- Adolescence – Children are prone to bumps to the face and they are learning how to properly care for their teeth. Many indulge in some not so healthy food choices that can leave their teeth especially vulnerable to decay and plaque.

Why See a Pediatric Dentist?
A pediatric dentist specializes in the field of child dentistry with an additional two or three years of study to learn the ins and outs of young dental patients. In pediatric dentistry, we will typically have patients ranging in age from birth up to 18 years. Our child dentists also have additional training in child psychology to help them effectively interact with young patients.
At Keswick Kids Dental Clinic, the three primary goals of our pediatric dental practice are to:
- Assess whether your child is properly cleaning their teeth at home on a regular basis.
- Identify any problems with your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw early on, before they become serious concerns.
- Help your child become comfortable with visiting the dentist – no fears here!
Our pediatric dentists are also trained in working closely with parents to educate and support families throughout the development of their children. Our pediatric dental practice can help with concerns such as:
- Teething
- Cavities
- Proper oral care
- Custom sports mouth guards
- Child friendly dental products such as toothpaste and mouthwash
- Braces and orthodontic requirements
- Child tooth extractions and how to avoid them
Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist
The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) recommends that all children visit a pediatric dental practice within six months of their first tooth appearing, or by the age of one. The goal of pediatric dentistry is to catch any dental problems early on while they are still small and easy to fix. Early dental visits also help get both baby and parent used to visiting and looking forward to seeing the dentist.
What To Expect at Your Child’s Dentist Appointment?
There are several things we will examine and tend to during pediatric dentistry:
Oral Cleanings – Our dental hygienists will carefully remove any plaque and calculus. This helps remove stains from the teeth and below the gum line, and helps to prevent decay.
X-Rays – As needed, we will take pictures of what is happening below the gumline to help identify cavities in their early stages, assess root development, and identify adult teeth coming in below the gum.
Oral Inspection – Our pediatric dentist will carefully examine your child’s mouth, gums, and teeth for any warning signs of decay, cavities, or other dental problems.
Fluoride Treatments – Depending on the patient, our children’s dentist may recommend a fluoride treatment to help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. Adminstering fluoride is a safe and effective treatment for children and used around the world. Only a small amount of dental fluoride is applied and it hardens quickly – the potential to swallow is negligible.
Dental Sealants – If your child has not had dental sealants before, we may recommend this treatment to seal off the surface area of teeth. Dental sealants are very effective at preventing cavities.
Oral Care Advice – Both our hygienist and pediatric dentist will recommend ways to improve your child’s oral care habits, such as how to properly brush and floss.
Remember, good oral habits developed at a young age will also encourage lifelong patterns of good oral health! In pediatric dentistry, your dentist and hygienist will play an important part in your child’s smile and the overall health of their teeth.

FAQ Pediatric Dentistry
Why see a pediatric dentist?
Pediatric dentists have specialized training for treating children of all ages throughout their development. This includes infants and toddlers, young children transitioning from their baby teeth to their adult teeth, as well as adolescent and teenage children.
How is a pediatric dentist different from a regular dentist?
While a pediatric dentist has smaller tools for working with children’s teeth, they’ve also been trained on how to interact with children of all ages. Empathy, effective communication, and how to eliminate a child’s anxieties and fears are also part of their extensive training.
Is pediatric dentistry a specialty?
Yes, pediatric dentistry is recognized as a specialty because the tools, procedures, and techniques they use need to be adapted for working with children who have smaller mouths.
What is the main focus of Pediatric Dentistry?
The main focus of pediatric dentistry is preventative and therapeutic oral health care for children of every age, from infants to adolescent and teenage children.
How often should my child see the pediatric dentist?
The oral health of your child is vitally important during the development years. The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children should have their teeth checked at least every 6 months.
Can a regular dentist treat children?
A general dentist who has been trained to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with permanent adult teeth can also treat children. However, most general dentists do not possess the specialized training or special tools required to work with very young children who still have their baby teeth.
What is a pediatric dentist called?
A pediatric dentist practices pedodontics, which is a specialized branch of dentistry for the care and treatment of children’s teeth.
